It is truly outrageous that after five years of this crisis, after this ever increasing depreciation of the political system and public sector officials for corruption to carry on living the life of Riley.

The evidence that the president of the authority for combating money laundering Mr. Nikoloudis submitted in Parliament unfortunately indicate that there are still many corrupt civil servants who insist on evading taxes and laundering money, despite the outcry.

It is impressive that aside from the doctors and ESY directors being on the list, mayors are also on top of the list. In local communities there was a feeling for some time now that they had outbreaks of corruption.

Now it is officially proven that corruption does not just affect the central political scene, but that it also branches out to wider sectors and is expanding into a vast network of individuals who take advantage of their authority for personal gain.

Unfortunately local government authorities have repeated many of the mistakes of the partisan system, having adopted the same sinister methods of squandering public funds. Often the local communities would tolerate and be complicit, as they were taken care of, at least a few crafty ones at least, with sinecure, contract work and other such activities.

It is no coincidence that many municipalities are in debt even today and they are unable to be on top of their obligations and cover the needs of their people.

The upcoming local government elections are an opportunity to separate the wheat from the chaff. Because the people who experience the problems in their every day life, who are much more aware of what is going on in their local community than any inspection can reveal, they can select leaders who can guarantee that they are going to fight for the good of their land, rather than line their pockets/

Ultimately it is our responsibility to chose and elect the ones are most worthy, beyond political beliefs and preferences.
