In a democracy it is the undeniable right if every defendant to be able to defend his ideas and try to justify his actions. The incredible hatred of the young children implicated in the “Conspiracy of Fire Cells” against society, judges and the system at large should cause concern.

How is it possible for young people who have been brought up in relative financial comfort, who do not have experiences of employment or social repression, in a country where they can freely interact with their friends and acquaintances, who have not lived through the dictatorship or civil war, like the older generations, to adopt the most extreme form of violence and make self-destructive choices.

However understandable youth rebelliousness may be, however welcome the reaction to established ideas may be, the worship of violence, this complete hatred against society, institutions and people is incomprehensible.

The spark that was struck is December 2008 appears to have ignited a flame of uncontrollable destruction, an extreme anarchist intent that affects all forms of social organization. It is a fact that violence and conflict have infested Greek society for some time now. The assumption of this understanding, from these groups is unprecedented.

It is time we thought and realized that tackling them is not just a police matter. It is time we thought about the greater responsibilities of family, education and politics that lead to these phenomena.

In all developed countries, in all societies there are extreme cases of discontented youth, but not like with us. The constant reproduction of terrorism is our country is probably a unique phenomenon. We see this all the time. Perhaps its is time we realized that with police suppression alone we cannot tackle this problem at its root. We must seek the deeper causes that lead to violence and terrorism, to understand as a society and state what we are doing wrong, what is wrong and why the seeds of evil are constantly blossoming. We must finally question why family, school, our culture, our political system cannot prevent such hate-filled expression, this perpetual reproduction of violence and terrorism.
