A Turkish court today rejected the fourth consecutive request for release pending trial of two Greek army officers who have been imprisoned in a maximum security prison after their 1 March arrest, without yet being charged.
The Edirne court rejected the request.

They are in their 111th day in jail.

The two officers were led to an Edirne court where a judge ruled on their request in a swift procedure, due to the upcoming Turkish elections on 24 June.

The two Greek officers were captured by Turkish military forces at the Kastanies, Evros border region, when while on patrol they mistakenly, as they said, veered past the Turkish border due to poor weather conditions.

On 22 May, a Turkish court rejected their third petition for release pending trial, on the grounds that they had no residence in Turkey and posed a flight risk.

In the interim, the Greek Parliament passed legislation whereby the two officers are being given a military transfer to Turkey, so that they could have a permanent residence there.
