The Minister of Culture may not have work to demonstrate, but he has made his presence known with the removals and changes in the administrations of bodies under his supervision. We may not see a plan on how to showcase our cultural heritage, how to best take advantage of the scarce resources available for culture, but we understanding that the Minister’s top priority is to change administrations and directors under various pretexts, while the main criteria is whether they are favored by the governing party.

So after Mr. Loukos was removed from the Athens Festival, it was time for the administration of the Greek Film Center, which he himself had a appointed only a few months ago. The problems affecting all bodies of culture in our country are known and huge. Obviously the people who manage the sectors that produce and trade in cultural goods are important. However these are not the only problems and misfortune in this area. Despite this, the impression is that an extreme logic has prevailed.

Just like every other section of the miserable Greek reality, there is a lack of a plan in the area of culture over what we want, what we are after, what our aim is and how we can achieve all this. The easy solution ever time is to blame some people and expect the problems will be solved by magic with their replacement.

One would expect greater patience, insight and tolerance to different ideas from a man of science and ideas such as Mr. Baltas. Unfortunately it turns out that he is bound by his partisan beliefs and failing to meet expectations…
