The negotiations that begun in Brussels are a first positive step in normalizing the relationship between Greece and Europe. So long, of course, as communication logic does not prevail and the climate of consent that is being created is not undermined. Valuable time has been wasted by the current and previous governments for petty partisan or electoral purposes, which have consequently brought on the asphyxiating climate that has descended upon the economy.
Irrespectively of how we call the institutions, Brussels Group or Athens Group, it is obvious that we must live with them. It is time that we finished with the stereotypes and dealt with the essence. The new relationship with Europe which the government is pursuing can only emerge from negotiating and coexisting with them. It must be clear that if everyone’s strategic goal is for the country to remain within the Eurozone, then the relationship of trust with our partners must be restored.
That is the primary responsibility of the Prime Minister, to make it clear to all those who insist on living in the election campaign climate. Mr. Tsipras is not just the leader of SYRIZA; he is the Prime Minister of all the Greek people and has the duty and obligation to ensure the country’s progress. He also has far greater support that what his voters secured for him. He has the obligation of taking advantage of that trust in order to achieve an even better deal for the country in the negotiations and to get the most out of his government and officers.
It is high time that everyone understands that the climate of uncertainty must come to an end. The time left to make a new deal is too valuable for the economy and society to waste it on pointless conflicts and clashes.
