The possibility of SYRIZA winning the upcoming general elections in Greece is not “scaring” Berlin anymore, according to the German press.
The Handelsblatt published an article commented that the possibility of a SYRIZA win is not scaring Berlin, adding that some economists consider some of the demands posed to be justified.
Similarly, an article in Der Spiegel stresses that since Greece “remains bankrupt” the question should not be whether a debt haircut is appropriate, but rather when and how it will happen. The article argues that Europe must actively seek a sustainable solution to Greece, claiming that a conversion of the debt and payment in relation to growth is the best option.
The electronic edition of the Die Ziet newspaper reports that Alexis Tsipras’ proclamations regarding the economy are based on the assumption that Greek will not pay a significant part of its debt. The article opines that the new government will have greater room for negotiation and that “the signs are not bad for Mr. Tsipras”.
On the contrary, business review Wirtschaftswoche warns that if Greece is unable to pay of its debts within the next three years and cannot secure funding within the Eurozone, then it may be time to “end a relationship” that was “wrong from the beginning”. The Wirtschaftswoche stresses that the Eurozone must maintain a consistent stance towards Greece, in order to send a clear message regarding balancing budgets.
