The latest cold weather front to hit Greece persists

The latest cold front that has hit Greece has an “avalanche” of problems, particularly in transport as the frost has turned roads and highways into ice rinks, while many schools will remain closed.

Schools in the northern and eastern areas of Attica, Crete, Florina, Kastoria and the Cycladic Islands will not reopen on Thursday after the winter holidays. Temperatures are expected to remain rather low throughout the day, with certain areas in the north of the country and the islands being hit the hardest. Crete saw major snowfall, with about a meter and a half of snow in certain areas.

The Fire Brigade in Crete was called out to help people who were trapped in their vehicles by the snow near Lasitihi. Access to many villages on Andros and Tinos has also been blocked due to the snow. Similar problems, albeit to a lesser extent, are being reported in Naxos, Syros and in Evia.
