According to Deputy Minister of Finances Giorgos Mavraganis, in the first 9 months of 2012 the Police arrested 686 people for outstanding debts worth 1,316,958,111.35 euros to the State.

The information was made public, following a question in parliament by New Democracy MP Vasilis Kikilias about the police’s progress in arresting people with outstanding debts to the State.

The criminalization of tax evasion has been adopted as art of a system of measures to methodically and efficiently combat the problem. Mr. Mavraganis further explained that since May 2011 the Economic Police, under the command of the Greek Police, is responsible for dealing with the non-payment of debts to the State.
