The privatization of airports in Greece, as outlined in the bailout agreements, is causing tension within the government, as reflected in the case of the Athens International Airport.
According to the bailouts, the concession agreement for the Athens International Airport must be extended for a further 20 years, from 2026 to 2046. The airport president Panagiotis Roumeliotis has argued that such a development would be a “scandal”, further escalating his clash with TAIPED president Stergios Pitsorlas.
Mr. Roumeliotis informed the Ministers of Finances and Infrastructure Euclid Tsakalotos and Christos Spirtzis on the development and argued that the concession agreement ends in ten years, after which point the airport will return to public hands.
