Minimum guaranteed income trial period begins in September

According to a report in Ta Nea, the deputy Minister of Labor Vasilis Kegeroglou has vowed to issue the relevant Ministerial Decree in order to implement a trial period of the government’s ambitious minimum guaranteed income scheme.

The newspaper report reveals that the trial will be implemented in two municipalities in Greece and will have an initial budget of 20 million euros.

The ambitious government scheme aims to support those under the poverty line, by providing them with a monthly benefit of up to 400 euros (for a four-member family) and 4,800 euros annually.

The coalition government’s ultimate goal is to expand the program on a nationwide level in 2015.
