Kouvelis & Swoboda call for support of European socialist movements

The President of the Democratic Left party Fotis Kouvelis and the President of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda meet today to discuss recent developments in Greece and Europe.

At the end of the meeting, Hannes Swoboda commented that the in their discussions two leaders agreed that it is imperative to support socialist representation in Greece and Europe. Mr. Kouvelis noted that his party supports all socialist efforts ahead of the upcoming European elections and that he aims to help create a new, united European reality that will be in the position to tackle the crisis.

Mr. Swoboda was particularly interested in the emergence of the Initiative of 58 in the Greek political scene, with whom he met earlier on his trip in Athens, as the group has the potential to help maintain balances in European parliament. The Austrian politician also assured the Greek leader that the S&D party will welcome DIMAR in its ranks if any of its members wins a seat in the European parliament.
