In what was perhaps its most spectacular performance in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Greece trounced the Romanian national team 3-1 at the Karaiskakis stadium on Friday, making the second leg of the knock-out phase more of a formality.
With forwards Kostas Mitroglou and Dimitris Salpingidis on top performance, Greece found itself ahead early on in the game with the Olympiacos striker at the 14th minute of the game. Romania scored equalizer five minutes later with Stancu, but PAOK’s forward put Greece ahead once again.
Greece dominated in the second half of the match with Mitroglou scoring a second goal at the 60th minute, ending all Romanian hopes of a tie. With the Romanian defensive line in ruins, the Greek team missed a number of opportunities and was unable to increase the score.
Greece departed for Romania today, with the second game of the knockout phases scheduled for Wednesday.
