The black-and-white logic that is once again prevailing in politics – and the pension reform in particular – is undermining the climate of stability that the country needs. Especially in a period of major tension in the international markets, due to China, with as yet unknown consequences, the concern for the financial and political developments is increasing.
On the one hand the government is oversimplifying its proposal on the pension reform and claims that the imminent cuts are smaller than the previous ones, while the opposition insists that the impact on pensions will be worse than ever. The production bodies of the economy, which are caught between the crossfire, are experiencing the problem to the fullest extent and are trying to find a balance in recognizing the need for change, but with the smallest possible impact on pensioners and economic activities.
It is self-evident that for the unavoidable social security system reform to be successful, a minimum consensus and coordination is necessary. We still have a long way to go to put an end to the uncertainty that plagues the economy and society. The Eurogroup president made it crystal clear on Thursday, when he stated that the first review will last months and not weeks, as the government plans.
After the traumatic shock of the past few moths, the last thing the country needs is to enter a new round of endless negotiations that will paralyze the economy once more. The government and opposition must bear this in mind.
The fatigue and frustration documented in the political polls is a clear warning to everyone. The suffering people cannot endure yet another pointless and catastrophic political conflict. They demand coordination, stability a responsible leadership that will finally pave the way to exit the crisis.
