The US Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew has urged the Greek government and European institutions to set the rhetoric aside, in order to come to an agreement, a few hours prior to his meeting with Yanis Varoufakis in Washington.
In his interview for Bloomberg Mr. Lew called both sides to agree on the policies that must be implemented so that Greece may overcome the current crisis. He stated that Greece must present a comprehensive plan, but the institutions must also become more realistic. The American politician underlined that time was pressing and that it would have been preferable to have determined the policies that Greece required six weeks ago.
Regarding the possibility of a “Grexit”, Mr. Lew claimed that a departure from the Eurozone would cause major upheaval and hardship in Greece. He was quick to warn though that such a dramatic development may have unpredictable consequences, despite claims that the risk of affecting other EU countries is far lesser than it was in 2012. Mr. Lew believes that the uncertainty could affect the global economy’s recovery from the deep recession.
