Heavy snowfall continues in most regions of Greece

Very low temperatures, heavy snowfall even in the center of Athens and the stormy winds continue to cause problems in many areas of the country.

Frost and polar temperatures across Greece will be the main features of the weather until tomorrow, meteorologists predict.

However, the ferry routs from the ports of Rafina, Lavrio and Piraeus are being carried out normally after some weather improvement and weaker winds Wednesday night.

Due to heavy snowfall in Attica vehicular traffic was blocked in some regional roads and many schools were closed in the eastern and northern parts.

Rough weather led to cuts of electricity in some regions in Chania, Crete, and the island’s wider road network while the national railway line in Alexandroupolis is still covered by water causing a stoppage in train routes in the area.

Meteorologists expect local snowfall mainly in the mountains of Crete, temporally in Eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Euboea, in the eastern mainland and the northern and eastern suburbs of Attica.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) reports that frost will be locally strong in the northern pats of the Greek mainland, especially during morning and evening hours. For example the temperature in Western Macedonia will be ranging from -8 to 8 degrees Celsius. Some improvement is expected tomorrow mainly in the northern and western parts of the country.
