The main opposition party SYRIZA is in favor of changing the electoral law to proportion representation, however it does not appear to be prepared to vote against the 50-seat bonus which the leading receives.

Party secretary Dimitris Vitsas told Vima 99.5 FM that while SYRIZA’s position is to introduce a system of proportional representation, he argued that “those who created the current electoral law and which has suited them it for years must now pay for it” and argued that the next elections must be carried out with the current system.

Mr. Vitsas later argued that “this government has been elected with a 50-seat bonus, which it will loose from a Left government. Therefore I believe we should not vote for it”.

SYRIZA’s spokesman Panos Skourletis appeared on SKAI and urged the government to introduce legislation to abolish the 50-seat bonus and call general elections. Mr. Skourletis however estimated that the coalition government has no intention in changing the electoral law as it will be an indirect admission of defeat.
