It is time that our partners and creditors in Europe realized that their constant warnings and references – like the one Mr. Schäuble made yesterday; that our future with the euro depends on the implementation of a series of reforms – only serve to exacerbate the anti-European climate. The Greek people have decided for some time –and confirmed by the recent elections – that they consider our future in Europe and the euro to be a given and non-negotiable.
This choice was coupled and continues to be coupled with a harsh financial, social and political cost. These sacrifices cannot be ignored, nor can they be underestimated by anyone. Just like Mr. Schäuble and his likeminded fellows cannot ignore the message of dissatisfaction from most countries in the European elections. Europe needs to turn a page, just like Greece needs to start becoming a normal country again that is not constantly dependant on the choices and mandates of its creditors.
Obviously there are still problems and delays. But they have recognized that significant steps have been made, that the fiscal consolidation has progressed; the markets are positive towards us, while investors are demonstrating their interest in practice.
The scaremongering and constant reminders that we have a long road ahead of us and that we cannot deviate ever so slightly from the troika’s command only causes problems and reactions. If Mr. Schäuble really wants to help he should stop being so concerned with Greece, which at the end of the day is not a problem anymore for Europe. He is well aware, after all, that there are other countries with problems just as important, if not greater, that pose a threat to stability in Europe.
