Cattle farmers protesting over planned deregulation of fresh milk

Cattle farmers from all over Greece are headed to Klafthmonos Square in Athens today, where they have planned to demonstrate against the possible deregulation of fresh milk.

According to an OECD proposal, the Greek government must deregulate the sale of what is sold as “fresh milk”, extending the life-span of milk. The farmers fear that this will encourage dairy industries to import cheaper milk.

The farmers, who are primarily from Macedonia and Thrace where about 60% of domestic milk is produced, will also attempt to meet with the Minister of Agricultural Development Athanasios Skordas and his deputy Maximos Harakopoulos.

After the farmers conclude their demonstration they will give a press conference to explain their positions.
