Olympiacos B.C. has been crowned champion of Europe for the second time in row (and third time in club history), beating Real Madrid by 100 – 88 in the Final Four final of London.
Despite a shaky first quarter which found the “Reds” trailing 17 points (10-27), the Reds bounced back in the second quarter (37-41), with team captain Vasilis Spanoulis taking charge in the second half. By the end of the third quarter the two teams were tied (61-61), however Olympiacos’ players appeared more confident by the middle of the final quarter managed to secure a 12-point lead. With Real Madrid unable to keep up with the pace, it was only a matter of time before Olympiacos secured the third European title.
By repeating last year’s challenge, Olympiacos has become the third team to win the Euroleague trophy consecutively (KK Jugoplastika and Maccabi Tel Aviv being the other two). Olympiacos guard A.C. Law was announced as the final’s MVP, while team captain Vasilis Spanoulis was announced as Final 4 MVP for the third time in his career. Olympiacos’ coach Giorgos Bartzokas became the first Greek coach to win the trophy.
