Residents in Halkida, Fthiotida and all the way in Athens were woke up by an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, which occurred at about 4:09am on Tuesday morning in the north of Evia.

According to the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory, the earthquake took place at about 77km north-northwest of Athens and 26km northwest of Halkida, at a depth of about 13km. Professor Efthimios Lekkas reported that it was caused by a fault line near the Atalanti fault line. The two fault lines, he added, were unrelated.

A couple aftershocks followed – 3.8R at 4:13am and 3.3R at 5:31am – suggesting that there was no reason for further concern. Although no damages or injuries were reported, authorities will be on standby for the next 48 hours.
