Anarchists and police clash in downtown Athens after protest

A solidarity demonstration for the ongoing hunger strike by prison inmates escalated into violent clashes between a group of anarchists and riot police in down town Athens. Thirty protesters were detained, nine of whom were eventually arrested. Τwo police officers were reported injured.

About 70 people three Molotov cocktails, stones and fireworks at the police, which responded with flash bangs and tear gas, for the first time since the new government came to power. During the exchange two parked cars were caught up in flames.

A number of protesters sought refuge in the Athens Polytechnic, from where they launched attacks against the police. The situation remained tense until about 10:30 in the evening, with the police patrolling the area around the square in Exarchia.

Earlier anarchists demonstrated in the city center in solidarity to the ongoing hunger strike of prison inmates. When they approached Parliament they spray-painted slogans on the courtyard walls. This prompted the reaction of New Democracy, which demanded resignations.
