The Propylaea, the central building of the University of Athens in the city center, was the stage of clashes between students and riot police on Thursday.

The riot police unit had recently been stationed outside the main building in order to prevent students from entering and carrying out a demonstration. The students attempted to jump over the fence, prompting the intervention of the police. The protesting students later departed and headed towards the Law School.

The Rector Theodoros Fortsakis had requested the presence of the police outside the building, which has been stationed there since last Monday, after a student protest. Administrative employees from the University have complained that access to the building complex is restricted to certain hours in the day.
