It is only a short while before the Merkel-Samaras meeting and the European Commission as well as the head of the European Central Bank Mr. Draghi have recognized the important steps that our country has taken. In its report on the implementation progress the Commission notes that Greece has made remarkable progress, but also that we have been affected dearly by the crisis.
When addressing the European Parliament, Mr. Draghi also found that we have achieved significant progress both with regards to fiscal measures and structural reforms. The chancellor spokesman also noted encouraging sings, shortly before the meeting of the two leaders.
The recognition of our effort from our creditors is obviously important, especially ahead of the upcoming troika review which will largely be determined by the effort to disentangle from the bailout and its tight-grip control.
Our findings and wishful thinking thought are not enough to put the Greek economy on a stead path of growth. Despite the inevitable problems and delays, thanks to the huge sacrifices of its people Greece has managed to live up to its commitments.
It is time that our partners and creditors also live up to the promises they have also made, particularly regarding the debt. The various problems on our behalf cannot be an excuse to constantly postpone this matter.
It is paramount for an economy – just like ours, which for five years was in a state of recession, pressure and insecurity – to have a steady horizon. Chancellor Merkel, who will be informed today by the Prime Minister on the state of the economy and the government’s plans, will have to understand that a society living on the edge – and not just Greece – cannot face the crisis and return to grow and neither can Europe confront its problems.
