The beheading of a second American journalist by the Islamic State dramatically reminds us of the geopolitical crisis that is currently dominating in the greater Middle East and northern Africa.
In conjunction with the ongoing Ukrainian crisis, it is becoming clear that the world has lost its balance, while the threat of a long-term instability looms.
The fact that our corner in the greater Southeastern Mediterranean is home to the more serious outbreak of international tension and insecurity, creates serious threats and dangers for Greece.
In other words we should not just be concerned with managing the financial crisis, but our geopolitical position as well.
The way things are panning out means that the geopolitical crisis may be more critical than the financial one.
It is unfortunate that the Greek political class is not that concerned with the geopolitical problems, dangers and opportunities that may arise from our contact with the great crisis and conflict.
Greece has not yet reviewed, evaluated or put the geopolitical card into play.
Nevertheless, what is going on in our neighborhood and the greater world around us means that we must adopt a different stance.
One would expect from the government, the opposition arties, as well as the greater financial and social forces to have evaluated the new international geopolitical conditions and at least be prepared to discuss all that threaten us, as well as what could possibly improve our standing against the Europeans, Americans, Arabs, Russians and everyone else involved.
Greece has traditional ties and relations with those implicated in the great conflict, can offer valuable service, intervene and contribute towards peace in the region.
Our country is able to simultaneously talk to the Europeans, Americans, Russians, Iranians, Israelis, Arabs, Kurds, Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians, Iraqis and a host of others, when everyone else implicated in the conflict is unable to approach one another.
The Greek geopolitical card now has value, which at present, is paramount. All that remains is for our political class to realize this, which typically cannot tell the forest from the trees.
