It is plain obvious what the unified real estate tax, the illustrious ENFIA, is going to entail.
Under pressure from the financial circumstances and the troika for imposing a universal tax on real estate, the Ministry of Finances decided first to write its tax and then to see if it can be implemented.
As a result of this tax raid of a law, there were injustices, distortions and profound charges, all of which have been admitted.
The Ministry of Finances’ announcement is revealing and clearly apologetic. For the first time in history the Ministry of Finances is admitting that the tax is excessive and contains many injustices.
However the recognition of the problem is not enough, nor is the ability to submit an supplementary corrective tax return enough.
First and foremost the leadership of the Ministry of Finances must announce the exact amount it hopes to collect from the ENFIA.
It has all the necessary data, has issued all invoices for the real estate tax, so it must now announce the total sum it will collect from the taxation of Greek property.
To make it clear how excessive the tax is, to ascertain the country’s true fiscal needs and based on that data to carry out corrections and discounts that will make the tax bearable for each taxpayer according to their assets and income, as stated in the Constitution.
Everything else is the work of tax raiders and mandarins, which have no place in Greece of perpetual crisis.
