The European election results confirmed that while the Center Left is alive and active, it is still looking for the entity that will give it a voice. Based on the discussions that preceded and followed the elections, it is clear that the present organized forces are unable to express the Center Left as a whole and – more importantly – give it the necessary political momentum. The Center Left though, as it has been proven historically and within the current context of the crisis management, is a force of stability and balance for the political system.
The afflictions, personal ambitions and conflicts that infest almost the entire spectrum of the Center Left have not allowed the necessary reconstruction to go ahead. It is obvious that the people want it, but it is just as obvious that the leaders are unable to overcome their tight, inflexive partisan patriotism.
So while everyone announces their intention to reconstruct the Center Left, they are unable to carry out their plan. There is no more room for further ostensible scheming. PASOK, at least its leadership, believes that the cooperation of various forces in the Center Left is a strategic choice. Various initiatives and movements work towards that goal. Yesterday Mr. Lykoudis went one step further and proposed the creation a joint committee by the Olive Tree, the River and DIMAR in order to initiate an honest and frank discussion, as he said, to work towards reconciliation in the Center Left.
The task is neither simple, nor easy. It is, however, necessary for the organized bodies in the Center Left to make the next step without any hegemonic attitudes, scheming or exceptions.
The goal is not to force unions just to survive in the elections, but to come to a political agreement that will aim to the future and leave the mistakes and blemishes of the past behind.
It is the only way the traumatized and fragmented Center Left can reclaim the political power it once had.
