A tragedy had to take place, the death of a young child, so that we realize that we are a country without rules and regulations, where unaccountability, carelessness and neglect are the rule of law.
Even in areas and sectors where there should be strict rules and constant inspections, such as entertainment areas for children, it turns out that everyone is left to luck and the good will of each business owner.
Laws are enacted in drovers, but nobody cares about their implementation afterwards. Unfortunately it is not just the central administration that is indifferent or operates at a turtle’s pace, but the municipal authorities as well, which should be protecting the interests and health of their people with far better care.
In our case, the Municipality of Argyroupoli-Elliniko, with a mayor who comes from the Left – who struggled for free open spaces for years, so that nightclubs are not built on the beach – granted a lease for the area without any inspection as it turns out, without any care about what would happen over there where an amusement park operated for months without a license.
It is time we – and specially those who in public office – realized that grandiose statements and promises of protecting public interests are not enough if they are not accompanied by certain actions, particularly if they are not coupled by consistency and responsibility in our daily practices.
It is shameful for a country and society if it needs a tragedy to wake and start questioning why the laws are not implemented, why precautionary inspections are not conducted and why all sorts of servants of the public interest are primarily looking our for their own interests, resulting in the people paying dearly for their indifference.
