The resignation of Baltakos, but mostly the revelations that accompanied it, were a blow to the government. To Vima had warned of Mr. Baltakos’ role and contact with prominent members of the neo-Nazi group months ago, but perhaps some considered it normal for the government’s General Secretary to be socializing with the more extreme aspect of the political spectrum. It was the time when some cultivated the theory of Golden Dawn being a useful back-up.

Mr. Baltakos was caught in the spider’s web he weaved, out of trust and ideological relationship with Kasidiaris and his buddies. Mr. Baltakos’ political future does not concern society or the political system, however, there are political liabilities for those who trusted such a critical role to a persona whose extreme political beliefs were know, since he never kept them a secret.

It should be clear that the government majority – fragile as always, due to the political differences of its two coalition parties – cannot be based on people with questionable political and ideological opinions. The crisis that Mr. Baltakos caused by trying to help Golden Dawn is a good opportunity to rid the political landscape from the agents and people who operate outside the framework of the government cooperation.

As for the so-called interventions in justice that Golden Dawn invokes with the help of Mr. Baltakos, it is clear that the ustice has the evidence that leaves no doubt as to the neo-Nazi party’s criminal activities. By being very persistent and without any ulterior motives, the judiciary has managed to shed light on the structure, operation and liabilities of specific people.

The Baltakos affair should alarm the government and the Prime Minister himself that they cannot entrust people with critical positions who have extreme political beliefs, who operate in the shadows for all sorts of ulterior and selfish motives. The political system is paying enough for its sins, it does not to add any more simply because some cannot understand that the times have change, yet they insist on playing silly political games.
