In his plea on Wednesday, the former deputy director of armaments at the Ministry of National Defense Antonis Kantas alluded to two important political divs being involved – one of whom is still active – without however identifying them by name.
Based on rumors circulating amongst judicial circles the revelation of the names of the two politicians would likely have a huge impact in the political scene. Mr. Kantas explained these two politicians “could not be ignored by the German companies in order to secure the signatures for the 1.9 million euro deal that was for machine guns from German company Krauss Maffei”.
The former director identified committee members at the Ministry of National Defense who were involved in the controversial armament deals and named Swiss banker Fanis Lyginos and Spyros Metaxas as playing a critical role in laundering the bribes.
Mr. Kantas claimed that Lyginos and Metaxas were well aware of the bribes and even took the initiative to create a network of offshore companies to launder the millions of euros worth of bribes. The former deputy director also pointed out that Metaxas was not willing to return any of the bribes to Greece.
Document reveals how German bribe were distributed
A detailed ledger report that was recovered from Dimitris Papachristos, who is currently detained until trial, contains a wealth of evidence regarding bribe payments made to Kantas and military officers.
The document shows how Krauss Maffei, the German company Papachristos worked for, paid out bribes to Kantas and officers in the Armed Forces via offshore companies and Swiss bank accounts.
The recovered ledger report is available here.
