The Deputy Minister of Health Antonis Bezas announced that EOPYY would cancel the contracts of about 850 doctors it employees who also have private clinics. Mr. Bezas made the announcement amidst an EOPYY doctor strike over suspensions, mergers and dismissals in the public healthcare system.

These doctors work morning shifts at EOPYY clinics and have the right to accept EOPYY insurance policyholders at their private clinics in the afternoon. Afternoon visits used to cost 10 euros, but as of Friday, the doctors will be able to set their own prices. Additionally, despite ending contracts with EOPYY, the doctors will still be able to issue prescriptions.

The Deputy Minister argued that “the reform in primary healthcare will continue” and stressed that “the people and the constitutionally established right of access to medicine and healthcare services are paramount”.
