“The government visit with the neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn to the remote border islands is covering up an indicted party with criminal action”. This accusation does not come from an opposition party or a media outlet targeting the government, bur rather from SYRIZA officers, some of whom are high up in the government.

While Prime Minister Tsipras was warning the German Minister of Foreign Affairs on the major threat stemming from the rise of the far right and populist, his government partner legitimized the presence of the far right, in the sensitive are of a remote border island and the Armed Forces.

Hypocrisy, unreliability and populism in all its glory. They may claim to be anti-nationalists and struggling against the far right, but in practice they do the exact opposite. Some SYRIZA officers may believe that a statement in protest is enough to maintain a leftist conscious, but unfortunately their overall policy and disparate alliance and nationalist populist part does not absolve them of their responsibilities.

It is clear that the alliance is not a coincidental choice out of necessity. It is an absolutely conscious alliance to satisfy the amalgamation of the anti-bailout audience, which gathered SYRIZA and extreme nationalist circles.

The tolerance of MPs and SYRIZA’s leadership to racist, homophobic and nationalist outbursts of MPs and Ministers of the Independent Greeks is indicative. The bonds of power appear to be much stronger than ideologies, policies and traditions in the left.

The Prime Minister should therefore not be looking for far right scarecrows in Europe and elsewhere. He is fostering the far right via his tolerance to the attitude, at least, of ministers and his partners.
