The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos has called a council meeting of political leaders, at the request of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, for noon on Friday, 4th of March.

Despite earlier reservations, the Secretary General of the Communist Party Dimitris Koutsoumpas will attend the meeting, after a brief talk with the PM over the phone. Mr. Koutsoumpas has argued that the meeting will be reduced to well-wishing, since the government and other parties have committed to the EU and NATO decisions.

The PM also contacted the president of the main opposition Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the head of the River Stavros Theodorakis, whom he also congratulated on his recent re-election.

The meeting was called ahead of the critical EU-Turkey summit on the 7th of March, which will focus on the refugee crisis. NATO’s involvement in the Aegean will be discussed, with the pressure mounting on Turkey to implement its recent agreement with Europe.
