Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier has argued that the European Union cannot solve its problems at the expense of a member-state, in an interview published in Ta Nea.

In his interview the German official underlined the necessity for the provision of additional European support to Greece in relation to the refugee crisis. Mr. Steinmeier also explained how both Greece and Germany are under major pressure from the crisis; Greece as a point of entry into Europe for refugees, for many of whom Germany is final destination.

Furthermore, the German Minister stressed that populists and far right elements are trying to take advantage of the dramatic situation in order to ‘set fire the foundations of Europe’ and repeated that member states blaming each other will not serve anyone.
