The president of the Supreme Court and caretaker PM Vasiliki Thanou has argued that the lack of suitable courthouses, secretaries and the lawyer strikes have caused major delays in the Golden Dawn trial.

Mrs. Thanou took a stand after the major uproar caused by the release from remand of the neo-Nazi party’s Giorgos Roupakias, self-confessed murderer of anti-fascist activist and rapper Pavlos Fyssas in 2013.

According to Mrs. Thanou, the lawyers must take into consideration the critical nature of the trial and urged the Bar Association to give special permission to the lawyers involved to carry on. She notes that the lawyer strike actions are not entirely to blame, but they are in part responsible for delays.

In response, the president of the Athens Bar Association Vasilis Alexandris commented that it is “deceitful and ostensible”, but added that the call for special permissions is being “adopted”.
