The Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation on Thursday morning for one missing refugee, after the wooden ship that was carrying them collided with a Coast Guard vessel, about half a mile off the coast of Mytilene.

Initially it was announced that eight people were missing at sea, however seven bodies have been recovered – two women, one man, three children and a baby.

In total 31 people have been rescued, with witnesses onboard informing the Greek Coast Guard that were some still missing at sea. The Greek authorities are being assisted by one Frontex vessel and aircraft.

A total of 141,919 refugees and migrants rescued in September

The Coast Guard announced that in September it located a total of 141,919 refugees and migrants in 795 different search and rescue operations, most of which took place in the eastern Aegean. A total of 189 vessel and three vehicles were also confiscated in September.
