With the first exit polls suggesting that SYRIZA is set to win the 2015 general elections, a New Democracy has began organizing its response to what appers to be a major defeat. New Democracy’s spokeswoman Maria Spyraki declined to comment to To Vima regarding SYRIZA’s “historic victory”, reflecting the somber mood within the party.
Mrs. Spyraki did not dispute the overall result of the exit polls that have been published, but stressed that there have been significant deviations in past elections. The ND spokeswoman admitted that her party was not convincing and had to take harsh measures, but urged for patience until the final official results are announced, before coming to any conclusions. Mrs. Spyraki noted that “these are an indication, not the true results. We must wait”.
The defensive stance that Mrs. Spyraki adopted in her response has been interpreted as an intention to not rush things and that party leader and outgoing Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is not prepared to give up the helm of his party.
