The International Monetary Fund is prepared to begin talks with the next government that is elected in Greece on Synday, with the IMF’s spokesman William Murray noting the Fund fully respects the democratic procedures in progress.
During the press conference in Washington on Thursday Mr. Murray clarified that the IMF is waiting for the new government to be elected in order to begin talks on the outstanding bailout review, adding that the possibility of a “Grexit” is unlikely.
When asked to comment on SYRIZA’s intentions to arrange an international conference on debt, the IMF spokesman responded that he will not comment on election-related matters, but noted that in every IMF review a new Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) is carried.
Furthermore, he argued that Christine Lagarde’s recent comment that “debt is debt” means that debt restructuring is a serious matter and that revising the terms of an agreement may have consequences that must be taken into consideration.
