The European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker urged the Greek government “to take major steps in our direction and we have to be ready to respond in an adequate way to these steps [that] they don’t have the choice not to take”.
Mr. Juncker made the comment at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, where he had been invited to speak at an event regarding the Future of Europe. New Democracy president Antonis Samaras was also present in Leuven for Mr. Juncker’s speech.
According to the European Commission chief, Greece made mistakes in the past, but the Samaras-led coalition government moved in the right direction. Mr. Juncker added that those who disputed these moves are now faced up against their election campaign promises.
He also ruled the possibility of a Greek departure from the Eurozone, explaining that aside from the profound impact on Greece itself, a “Grexit” would prompt the “Anglo-Saxon world” to try everything to break up the single currency area.
In his speech he claimed that his primary concern is not the Greek government, but rather the Greek people and claimed that they must be treated like a neglected part of Europe.
