Four Fire Brigade officers on trial for defective breathing devices

Four officers in the Fire Brigade will stand trial in November to address charges for not arrange for the proper maintenance of breathing devices used by firefighters. The case was launched after a firefighter breathed in toxic gasses during an exercise, which caused him ischemic cardiac disease and other health-related problems.

Specifically, the four officers are charged with not taking care for the proper maintenance of the breathing devices, not examining air quality and not procuring specialized certified air compressors to refill the breathing devices. They have also been charged with not keeping an inspection register for the breathing devices.

Officers in the Fire Brigade argue that this is very serious and noted that defective breathing equipment may have played a part in the death of a chief firefighter in September 2014, when a fire broke out in Paleo Faliro. The investigation has not yet concluded.
