Germenis, Iliopoulos and Boukouras face criminal organization charges

In light of the ongoing investigation into the criminal activities of Golden Dawn, the prosecution has sent a request to Parliament to lift the immunity of Golden Dawn MPs Giorgos Germenis, Panagiotis Iliopoulos and Efstathios Boukouras. The three MPs are accused of joining and directing a criminal organization.

The charges were brought after a protected witness reported that the three aforementioned MPs have important roles in Golden Dawn’s criminal activities and structure, along with Ilias Kasidiaris, Ilias Panagiotaros, Yannis Lagos and Nikos Michos.

Since the charges against and arrest of party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, the ‘criminal organization’ element of Golden Dawn is considered to have been ‘busted’, so participation in the criminal activities of Golden Dawn is not considered a ‘perpetual’ crime. As such, judicial authorities must formally apply for the immunity lift of further suspects.

While nothing has yet been decided, the Parliamentary Ethics Committee might convene even today and examine the prosecution’s request and forward the matter to the Parliamentary Assembly for a vote, which is scheduled to discuss the lift on immunity of other MPs (apart from Golden Dawn) on Wednesday.
