Thoughts for a commodity stock exchange

The Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Piraeus (EVEP) has announced that it supports the Athens Stock Exchange’s suggestion to the Ministry of Finances of creating a commodity stock exchange.

According to the proposal, the first product which would be negotiated is olive oil, with other popular agricultural products to follow suit. Based on the Athens Stock Exchange’s road show presentation in the USA, there is interest in such a move.

Commodity stock exchanges operate in many neighboring countries, such as Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Turkey, as well as in agriculturally developed countries such as Italy and Great Britain. Greece will have the benefit of choosing an appropriate operation model, based on the experiences of other countries.

In its request to the Ministry of Finances, EVEP also suggests that the commodity stock exchange be based in Piraeus.
