The Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has traveled to Sofia for the Supreme Council of Cooperation between Greece and Bulgaria, where he will meet with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and President Rosen Plevneliev.
The four main areas where the two countries aim to develop cooperation are energy, politics and diplomacy, economy and infrastructure and defense. Government officials have underlined that Bulgaria is Greece’s closest ally in the Balkans.
In relation to energy matters, the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipepline) and IGB (Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria) pipelines, as well as the construction of a LGN station in Alexadroupoli will be high up on the agenda.
On political and diplomatic level, PM Tsipras will aim to focus on cooperation with Bulgaria and developments in the Black Sea, as well as relations with Russia. Additionally, following a recent trip of the Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos to Bulgaria, it was decided to develop cooperation on defense issues, by offering technical know-how to help modernize the Bulgarian Armed Forces and defense industry.
The aim of the supreme council meeting will be to further develop cross border cooperation, particularly in logistics. The railway link between Varna and Alexandroupoli, which will connect the Black Sea to the Aegan while circumventing Turkey, will also be on the agenda, as it will also increase prospects of trade with Russia.
