The situation at the northern borders with FYROM is becoming increasingly tense as over 6,000 refugees have gathered at Idomeni, ever since Serbia and FYROM decided to close their borders to Afghan refugees and set limits on the number of Syrian and Iraqis to be allowed to continue their journey.

Although the authorities of the neighboring country allowed about 300 to cross over, the pressure on the Greek side of the border is increasing, as thousands more are expected to arrive at the border crossing. About 2,000 refugees are set to arrive in Piraeus on Monday morning from Chios, Lesvos and Leros. Many of them will be temporarily accommodated at the port of Piraeus.

While Greek authorities attempted to alleviate the pressure on the border area, many refugees decided to make their way to Idomeni on their own, walking great distances and braving their elements. Along the way local communities and volunteers have assisted them refugees, providing them with food and shelter.
