The leaders of the Popular Union and Plan B, Panagiotis Lafazanis and Alekos Alavanos, have announced their intention to cooperate in the upcoming elections and extended an invitation to the Communist Party. In their statements that followed their meeting on Sunday, the two leaders commented how they have had strong political and social bonds for years.

Mr. Lafazanis underlined that “we do not consider KKE our enemy. We do not consider any left-wing, progressive, anti-bailout force to be an enemy. On the contrary, we want to form a large, common front with all of these forces”. The Popular Union leader ruled out the possibility of a post-election alliance with SYRIZA, as it has “cooperated with New Democracy, PASOK and the River and because it voted in with them the third harsh bailout of austerity and subjugation”.

On his behalf, Mr. Alavanos argued that the current Parliament was one of “shame” in response to the recent agreement reached with Greece’s international creditors, but commented that “there is a source of honesty” in Parliament, namely the Popular Union. The Plan B leader also expressed his belief that “the fire of revolutionary creation that existed in SYRIZA a few years ago may be rekindled” and stated that the ultimate goal is to rid Greece of the restrictions imposed by the euro and creditors.
