A search and rescue operation was launched at noon on Tuesday, after a yacht carrying migrants sank in the area between Farmakonisi and Agathonisi in the Aegean.

Preliminary reports indicate that ten migrants were recovered by the Turkish Coast Guard and informed of others missing. A further six migrants were located and rescued soon after by the Greek Coast Guard, with a further 17 to 21 migrants believed to be missing. It is thought that 33 to 37 were on board the yacht.

The Coast Guard has dispatch a Super Puma helicopter and two vessels, while the Navy is assisting in the operation with a vessel of its own.
