A draft bill designed to address the escalating violence in sport and football in particular, will be submitted for discussion at the relevant Parliamentary Committee on the 27th, 28th and 30th of April, before being voted upon by the Assembly on the 4th and 5th of May.
The bill was drafted by Deputy Sports Minister Yannis Kontonis, in response to violent clashes of opposing fans at football games. Aside from serious clashes of fans with the police throughout the season, a 47-year-old football fan who traveled from Piraeus was killed in Crete in September, when assaulted by local fans.
Some of the provisions included in the draft bill however conflict with FIFA and UEFA regulations, meaning that Greek teams could be expelled from all international competitions. Last week FIFA and UEFA officials hinted that if the bill were to pass as-is, then the expulsion would be enforced.
