The Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis will visit Athens on Friday, in order to discuss the latest developments in the Cypriot dispute, finances and energy with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
According to the Cypriot government spokesman Nikos Christoulidis, Cyprus is prepared for the commencement of the third phase of talks with the Turkish Cypriot side. The question, Mr. Christoulidis notes, was whether the Turkish side has the political will to come to a solution.
Furthermore the spokesman stated that the road map recently submitted to the UN by Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Erogrlu was nothing new and has already been rejected by Cypriot President Anastasiadis. He estimated that Mr. Eroglu was acting up due to the upcoming elections in the occupied territories in Northern Cyprus.
While there have been some thoughts and considerations for Mr. Anastasiadis to announce a series of measures that will aim to build trust between both sides, the spokesman noted that they have been postponed until the elections are carried out next weekend.
Tax-related matters will also be on the agenda with the Greek Prime Minister, particularly Nicosia’s request to lift the Greek government’s 26% taxation on the import of products and services, to which Athens is likely to agree. Αdditional matters expected to be discussed include energy and the progress of Greece’s negotiations with the EU institutions.
