The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a demarche over disparaging remarks made by the German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble against his Greek colleague Yanis Varoufakis.

The demarche has been issued as Athens considers Mr. Schäuble’s words and practices to be unacceptable and unethical. The German Minister called Mr. Varoufakis “foolishly naïve” in a recent press conference in Germany.

When asked, Mr. Varoufakis refused to comment on the matter per se and noted that he took a political and civilized decision to not enter a competition that leads to blindness.

He further revealed that Mr. Schäuble told him that he has lost the German government’s trust, to which Mr. Varoufakis replied that he never had it in the first place, as he is a member of a radical left government. He added that the only way to gain mutual trust was to agree on common goals.
