The ailing Democratic Left has suffered a further loss, as MP Spyros Lykoudis has formalized his departure from the party by informing the President of Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis of his departure. Following Mr. Lykoudis’ departure, DIMAR will have a total of 10 MPs.

Mr. Lykoudis had hinted towards his departure in previous days, citing his disagreement with the party’s political direction. The former DIMAR MP specifically disagreed with approaching main opposition party SYRIZA.

DIMAR issued a statement regarding the departure, noting that it was “the final act of a preannounced schism, which was chosen over all concept of collectivity and democratic process”. DIMAR reiterated its call and invited party members and supporters to attend the party’s upcoming conference.
