According to Bulgarian media, it appears that the biological parents of 5-year-old Maria are Sasha Ruseva and Atanas Rusev, who live in Stara Zagora in Bulgaria. The Roma couple has been questioned by Bulgarian authorities in Gurkovo.
The Trud newspaper reports that the Bulgarian Roma couple has between seven and ten children, at least two of which are blond and blue-eyed, a 15-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, just like Maria.
Bulgarian media reported that one of couple’s children recognized Maria on the television, while a brother of Atanas Rusev claimed that Sasha Ruseva had abandoned a child in Greece because she had no money and was unable to secure the necessary documentation.
Neighbors however revealed that while the couple was in Greece for work that the mother had sold a child for 250 euros.
